I have challenged the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions over the amount his department spends challenging disabled people’s claims.
I raised reports that the Government is spending £22 million on more staff to challenge appeals on Personal Independence Payments and other forms of help. He told me the money is being spent to “improve” the system
Almost every day, my office is dealing with people who have had problems with their PIP claims. These are people who are living with disabilities -; something the Personal Independence Payment is designed to help with.
Many tell me they have been encouraged to apply for PIP, only to have their claims rejected, refused or downgraded. Instead of seeking to help these people, the Government is spending millions more on staff to challenge appeals.
The Minister describes this situation as an improvement. I do not think that my constituents who are being refused help would agree.
