I have raised concerns about policing cover with North Wales’ Chief Constable Mark Polin.

I raised concerns about both Wrexham Town Centre and ongoing issues in Caia Park with Mr Polin by letter and am calling for the level of policing cover the town gets to be investigated. I visited another Wrexham business affected by anti-social behaviour over the weekend -; and have particular concerns about reductions in the levels of policing in North Wales and in Wrexham.

My letter notes: “I have had issues raised with me by businesses locally and also by individual constituents. I am also very concerned about the continuing arson attacks that are taking place across Wrexham, but particularly in the Caia Park Wards. I know that there has been a very considerable reduction in policing levels in Caia and I think that this is contributing to the general sense of unease within the area.
“When I raise these matters with my colleagues in London and in North Wales my perception is that policing levels are more of an issue in Wrexham than they are in other constituencies. I wonder, therefore, if you could please give me a breakdown of the figures for the number of officers allocated to Wrexham town now as compared with 2010. I know that the overall figure for police officers has reduced but I would like to have more detailed information.
“I want to make absolutely clear that I see a considerable amount of good work carried out by individual police officers and police community support officers within Wrexham and they have all worked extremely hard to deal with what are substantial issues. However, there is a great deal of public concern on these matters.”

I wrote the letter as this is a persistent issue in Wrexham, and people tell me that the situation feels worse than it did five years ago. What we have seen in those five years is a deliberate reduction in funding for public services, like the police, by successive Governments.

Our police in Wrexham are doing good work which must be acknowledged -; but the Government keeps asking them to do more with less.
