I recently met members of Wrexham’s Armed Forces community to exchange ideas and discuss the issues facing them.
The meeting of the town’s Friends of the Forces group took place on Monday, April 30 at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel.
I praised the opening of the Ty Dewr and Ty Ryan homes, which help get Armed Forces personnel into suitable housing once they find themselves back in civilian life. We also discussed what could be achieved by investing in veterans -; and how to gain funding from other sources now the Libor Fund has closed.
Another item up for discussion was the future of Hightown Barracks, with concerns expressed about the recent move of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer (REME) unit from the town to Keynsham in Bristol.
The relocation of 101 Battalion REME was announced last year as part of the Army 2020 Refine restructure.
We all agreed that we needed to use the barracks site more effectively. I will be raising the future of the site with the Ministry of Defence.
