I HAVE lent my support to a campaign to secure a Children’s Funeral Fund across the UK.
The campaign calls for the Government to set up a fund to help parents who lose a child with the cost of the funeral. A fund has already been set up in Wales by the Labour Welsh Government – but despite pledges from the Prime Minister and others, funds to help set up a UK wide fund have not been set aside by the Government.
A group of Labour MPs have sent a letter to the Prime Minister, calling on her to take action and set up a UK fund.
We know that the death of a child is a profoundly distressing time for any parent.
However, the lack of a Children’s Funeral Fund for the UK means that some parents will be faced with finding the cost of their child’s funeral – something which we should not be asking bereaved parents to face.
The Welsh Government recognised this, and acted. The UK Government have also made clear their support – but that support has not yet been translated into action. That’s why, alongside dozens of colleagues, I have called on them to set up a Fund as soon as possible.
