Potential cuts to hundreds of jobs at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant need close attention from Ministers.

The immediate concern for Ministers must be to do what they can to help those affected by Vauxhall’s announcement. Ministers must ensure that PSA, the company which bought Vauxhall from General Motors, makes a firm commitment to investing in the UK.

It is also important that Ministers seek to reassure the automotive and aerospace sectors as the Brexit process continues. PSA are not attributing these job losses to Brexit, but there is a great deal of uncertainty in the industry which Ministers should move to allay.

Our region has a high number of these high-skilled manufacturing jobs – in industries which are truly global. It is for this reason that Ministers must work to ensure we have the widest possible access to European markets - if we are to have a Brexit which protects jobs.
