Confusing messages from the Government about some of the new drugs being taken on our streets are hampering efforts to tackle the problem.
That’s the clear message I have given Ministers after discussing the problem with people tackling this situation on the ground. They have told me we need clarity from the Government. Some substances cannot be possessed on the street while others can – some are even illegal in prison but not on the street. There have also been changes in the law in recent months – but these have not made as clear as they should have been by Ministers.
I have told the Government what experts are telling me – that the current confusion is hampering efforts to tackle the problems on our streets. We need action, not words, to tackle this problem on our streets.
