Plastic pledge welcomed

A PLEDGE from Environment Minister Michael Gove to look at the use of plastics in supermarkets - after I raised the issue with him yesterday - is welcome.

I told Mr Gove: “I noticed the appalling amount of plastic packaging on meat products, which seems to be in place for the ease of the supermarkets rather than that of their customers. Will the Secretary of State please raise the issue of packaging with the supermarkets?”

In reply, Mr Gove said that he “absolutely will” raise the issue with supermarkets.

I am pleased that the Secretary of State committed himself to looking at the use of plastics by our supermarkets.

This is a problem all of our supermarkets need to tackle, and one where the Government needs to show leadership. A lot of Wrexham constituents have raised concerns with me about the use of plastics, particularly single use plastics, by our retailers.

Recent announcements about reducing plastics use that the Government have made are welcome – but, on current timescales, we are still years away from action.
