We need answers on Barracks plans

I’ve asked the Conservatives to clarify their plans for Wrexham’s Barracks in Hightown.

It follows news they are considering moving 101 Battalion REME from the town. Ministers need to spell out very clearly what their plans are here – both for 101 Battalion REME and, crucially, for the future of the Barracks. I’ve put down written questions to find out.

This announcement has cause a great deal of concern and there is still uncertainty over what it means for Wrexham. Ministers have told me that they will work to transfer personnel to the Royal Welsh Regiment or other local units – but not what, exactly, the MOD’s proposals will mean for the town.

We need that clarity from them, which is why I have tabled these questions.

It is shocking that Wrexham and North Wales, with its great military tradition, is having its role transferred to south-west England. It is part of a wider picture where services have been taken away from our town, with proposals such as the closure of Wrexham tax office which is proposed to go to Cardiff.

What we need in Wrexham is for the Conservatives to support us – not to keep undermining our town.
